One of the biggest names in car audio has landed one of the top spots in our car subwoofer lineup. A member of their “Punch” line of subs, the Rockford Fosgate P3D210 rests safely in the third spot on our comparison of the best car subwoofers, boasting impressive sound quality, helpful customer support and potent volume levels. With a respectable performance in all three of the major categories we examined, Rockford Fosgate solidifies their ranking as one of the best speaker manufacturers in car audio. This all-around admirable performance earns this car subwoofer our TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award.
Rockford Fosgate has been a staple in the car audio industry since their inception in 1973. The first innovation they produced brought radical changes to audio, introducing several new approaches to the differences between car and home audio. Their amplifier models most prominently feature this approach, running audio in both stereo and mono simultaneously, producing a far more accurate and clean sound in cars. They continue to innovate to this day, producing some of the highest-quality car subwoofers and competitive car audio devices available.
A slightly more narrow frequency response range and lower power handling capabilities kept Rockford Fosgate’s P3D210 car subwoofer behind our top two contenders. Superior sound quality and a healthy selection of customer support pushed it past our lower-ranked component subwoofers, however. Rockford Fosgate’s 10-inch subwoofers might not pack as much power as some of the other models on our lineup, but their sound reproduction is exceptional.
This particular model of car subwoofer is only available in a two-ohm impedance configuration, limiting your wiring flexibility slightly. While you will always have to match your amplifier to your car subwoofer, be sure that the amp you purchase is able to transmit power with a two-ohm impedance load. As with other subwoofers, an impedance of only two ohms means that it will require less power to achieve the same amount of sound, though with the maximum power handling of these subwoofers, this is not often a major difference.
The power handling capabilities of this sub are slightly below our other products, coming in at only 400 watts of continuous power and a maximum of 800 watts of peak power. This limits the output power capabilities of your system slightly, though unless you’re in a car audio competition, this won’t have a large impact on your overall experience. As has been mentioned before, these car subwoofers are very capable of producing sound that can damage your hearing, so variations in power handling and output power should be cautiously considered.
This particular Rockford Fosgate 10-inch sub utilizes two voice coils, allowing for greater flexibility when determining wiring configurations. Each of the two voice coils that power the speaker cone has its own connection, allowing you to wire the sub in series or parallel, depending on your preference and needs. Since the wiring can lower the overall impedance load, it’s possible to gain more power from these dual voice coil (DVC) subwoofers.
This car subwoofer, despite its lower power handling, produces some impressive sound levels. Using a compatible amplifier and cranking the bass levels, we were able to get that frame-rattling bass we were looking for. If all you’re looking to do is pack enough bass into your car to make your license plate frame rattle, the Rockford Fosgate P3D210 will not disappoint you.
While we were impressed with the power of this car subwoofer, the accuracy of the sound it reproduced was much more noticeable. We were able to hear crisp, clean bass hits and low-frequency tones clearly with little distortion. Long, electronic bass notes became a little bit muddy while we listened, but in almost every other application, we were impressed by the clarity and quality of the sound. This is truly a stunning speaker.
Rockford Fosgate provides a great deal of helpful customer support on their website, providing email support, telephone and a useful FAQs section. The subwoofer comes with a user manual (also available on their site) that details specific usage requirements and specifications for enclosures. They also provide a limited one-year warranty, protecting your sub from damage incurred under normal playing stresses for the first year.
One of the rarer customer support features for a car subwoofer manufacturer that this company provides is an online forum. In their forums, you can post questions, discussion topics and other car audio-related inquiries or conversations and open them up to the car audio community. This forum was often a source of helpful information for us as we reviewed these speakers.
For a car subwoofer that will both shake your vehicle’s frame and produce clean, clear sound, the Rockford Fosgate P3D210 is one of the best car subwoofers available. It may not be able to handle all of the power that some of our other products do, and its frequency response doesn’t stretch quite as low, but this speaker will pack plenty of punch.
This sub's sound quality is impressively clean.
The 400 watt RMS power handling is somewhat low.
The sound quality alone makes this a fantastic car subwoofer.
